Ylang-ylang + powdery iris, with a blast of clove and ambery-woody on the background. A bit too heady & spicy for my likings, but still a lovely & interesting ylang-ylang scent i’ve encountered.

I can live without this. However, not so much with Tonka Imperiale…… Why would they discontinue that one…

BeanSoupBoy

I spoke with a Guerlain associate today who confirmed this one has officially been discontinued alongside Tonka Imperiale.

ADNisHere

🚨 This one and Joyeuse Tubéreuse will be discontinued and there is new florals in this line coming soon...

aboutjujulia

It will(may) discontinued very soon, grab it while you can

tessture

Rather liking this a lot. The Ylang-ylang, not my favorite note, isn’t offensive and actually adds a creaminess to the blend. It reminds me of something vintage, but overall I really like it’s soft, lightly floral smooth feel.

uno

tropical flowers on sparkling water with pinch of salt.
not my style but I like sparkle feeling.

Il Nanni

I got this version available for decanting. Pm me if interested

Kterhark

This was a scrubber on me, which I've never said about a scent from this line. This just got louder and louder, and not in a good way. I agree with whiteflowerprincess below; i think it's the cloves and other spices. This is more appropriately classified as a man's scent and is not a safe blind buy.

Heathermarie8617

I really like this one and so does my Husband. This is such a beautifully blended fragrance that is dominantly Y'lang Y'lang to my nose, but I can sense the "supporting cast" of other notes when it dries down on my skin. I believe this would be a wonderful year round fragrance that would bring reminders of Spring/Summer when it is colder and works as a beautiful scent in the warmer months. I'm not exactly sure if I will ever buy a full bottle, but that is okay. As much as I like this, I do believe I may grow tired of this after some time...so buying samples from time to time is aright by me for the time being. (Especially considering the expensive price point for a FB.)

Cheers!

Among my favorite parfums are a lot that contain Ylang-Ylang, so naturally I was curious to test Embruns d'Ylang.
The opening is very strong and hinting at the fragrance's longevity. I let it dry down, before sniffing it more, because of that. I like how complex the fragrance is and there's a lot to discover with the spicy cloves, the salt and other notes. It's well blended, but Ylang-Ylang clearly is the star of the show. Unfortunately, the note is too strong for my liking in this one. It does fade a bit after a while, which makes it more wearable to me, but I would of course prefer it to be enjoyable throughout, given the price. I read some people saying this reminded them of a day by the sea. I have different impressions from that, maybe because I spent most of my vacations by the mediterranean sea, instead of tropical places. So, it's not for me - but then there are so many other candidates in this line to wear and love!

The longevity is crazy. Washing my hands and wrist didn't do significantly much to this perfume. I tried scrubbing then, because I wanted to wear another fragrance and even after that it lasted for the rest of the day. So, that's a plus! Sillage was moderate, but I didn't really use a lot, just one spritz.

Tshahb

Addictive, delicious, blustery ylang and iris-forward scent. Very salty and brisk but with sweetness from the vanilla combining with the banana side of the ylang. Absolutely wonderful and totally unique.

Where there would typically be coconut, here there is salt and cloves (I think there's a song called Salt and Cloves...must Google later).

I get ambergris vibes too.

Performance is spectacular.

WhiteFlowerPrincess

Why do they have to ruin this with the cloves, patchouli and iris?! All three of these notes just choke out a lot of the lovely ylang ylang to my nose, one of my most favorite notes. I can smell it in here, but it's not as front and center as I'd like this perfume to be. It has too much spice going on and also too much of a green note. Too woody, too.

I'd like this perfume so much more if it was just salt, bergamot, ylang ylang, jasmine and vanilla only, with the ylang ylang being the main note. They call this an ylang ylang fragrance and yet it isn't an ylang ylang fragrance... it's a spicy and woody mess of everything! It smells unisex too and almost masculine to my nose. I'd like it so much more if it were softer, brighter, more yellow floral and more feminine. Let those bright banana facets of ylang ylang peep out more.

This perfume just makes me grimace in mild disgust. It might be long lasting, but it's very strong too. Sort of slightly rancid smelling. Eau Moheli EDT by Diptyque is so much better than this! Cheaper, too.

lmnsvgz

It is a heavy white-yellow floral scent. It is enigmatic and prominent, kind of reminiscent of the Malachites from the Armani Prive line. Definitely heavy on ylang ylang and jasmine. A bit earthy, but mostly a heavy, smooth, creamy floral that definitely isn't easy to wear unless you are into other prominent florals

Emera1d

I tested this from the new shaped bottles. It is mostly ylang-ylang and jasmine to my nose. Very smooth, soft and wearable, it feels like second skin. It does remind me of something but I can't place it yet. I would definitely test again as it feels like a cozy comfort blanket, perfect for cold weather.

ShowMustGoOn

Opens dark and medicine like but quickly turns into a bright yellow floral. Although very appropriate for nighttime wear too. I smell ylang ylang, jasmine and spices. I don’t really feel like it’s salty. It’s a very interesting composition. I never smelt anything like this. I get that to connection to Black Orchid from TF - it has a faint feel but it goes into a different direction. I cannot stand Black Orchid but this one is pleasant. Testing it out for now, not sure it’s full bottle worthy.

Scents4spirit

Oh my goodness where do I begin with this masterpiece composition. Spraying it all over my body and hair after a shower makes me feel divine. Salty opening and warm bright florals with a deep patchouli and sweet vanilla background, a relatively simple scent profile yet provides such unique complexity that works so so well. All the notes show up in perfect balance and serving their purpose in creating a harmonious blend. Stays on forever. Perfect for both daytime and nighttime. And as amazing as it is on its own, it makes heavenly scent combinations layered with other perfumes or perfume oils. My favourite to enhance the sweet warmth I love love to layer it with Byredo’s slow dance. If I had to choose only one perfume to wear for the rest of my life it would easily be this one. Unparalleled.

A_Ferrera

Nothing like Back Orchid, not sure how people are able to make this connection...

Absurd as it might sound, Embruns d'Ylang smells like Ylang Ylang floating in a Fanta, maybe the salt is what gives a feeling of fizziness? To my nose this isn't retro smelling, but instead something rather modern and crisp, the facets of jasmine and cloves make this scent incredibly memorable and unlike any other Ylang Ylang scent that I have smelled.

Performance is extremely good for something so delicately crafted and the projection/sillage is so romantic like ooofftt! I can only imagine wearing this somewhere in the tropics after the sun goes down etc.

Safe blind buy? Absolutely not, this is quite pricy and somewhat hard to find so I'd suggest sampling first or opt for something from the aqua allegoria line.

Deppaholic

This is so tender and shy, and young. The feeling I get when it drys down. The opening is gorgeous and really grabs your guts, and shakes you. It doesn't spin and out of notes on me. I get floral, a very delicate rich floral, I do not get any sea salt, but the citrus is there faintly at first. I really really love it. Maybe someday I might buy it. I think if you love a gorgeous floral, try this. It might be just what you were always searching for. Gorgeous as always from Guerlain. TW at his best again. I do not reach for florals much, and I have a few, but for those days I do, this is what I would choose now. It lasts pretty long, close to the skin, after a few hours, but still there for intimacy. Just simply gorgeous, especially in this cold weather. On my list.....

Cabz65

2019 I was in Paris at the guerlain store. I was overwhelmed with all the beautiful bottles and over 200 scent testers.

I left after purchasing a very common safe perfume. The samples they put in my bag though. One was embruns Dylang. I had a friend still in Europe personally buy it for me (after begging them)

This opens up warm and inviting. It reminds me of a summer or spring in the warm sun. It's sexy and inviting. I am so glad I have this perfume.

Im happy to offer a couple of 2ml decants if anyone in Australia are wanting to give it a try

brokesta911

Guerlain Embruns d’Ylang (2019) - salty ylang - Not an Ylang-ylang soliflore, this #delphinejelk and #thierrywasser creation combines woody planks, ocean air, ylang-ylang and jasmine, coconut sun-tan oil and tropical forest foliage. Apart from a lacking beach-side cocktail, wearing this immediately transports you to a vacation holiday.

Elysiom

I should love this fragrance based on the profile, I just don't agree with it. This is a soft lilac/wisteria on me. I don't smell salt or lemon really- maybe a little sweet orange blossom. This is a sweet floral- there is zero spice here. I get that little bit of salt at the drydown, but I have to really want to find it.

It's not bad. It's a safe spring floral perfect for the office. I actually do believe it is long lasting because it has outlasted many others on the strip tests, but its projection is very small. It's not strong but it's got legs. It just has no teeth to it.

I'm truly happy for those who love this fragrance, but it read very 'boring' to me on my skin. Nothing close to TF Black or Velvet Orchid- those are very rich and incense-like and this is absolutely not. I might try this again later- I was smelling Kenzo Jungle L'Elephant earlier today too and that is such a spicebomb punch that maybe the comparison is throwing my nose off? It was alright. I'll come back and edit this later if I try it another day and find it different.

Rozalina

How are people getting “long-lasting” with this? I love Guerlain but I think my skin doesn’t, because so many of the creations from this house last only a few hours on me. This lovely perfume does share similarities with the now discontinued Mahora (also from Guerlain) except that one becomes a soft but present skin scent after a few hours whereas Embruns d’Ylang I just cannot sense at all. I always jump at the chance to sample unique and non-screechy Ylang Ylang perfumes- this is certainly one of them. Sweet, tropical but not beachy, classy, quality! Beautiful use of ylang ylang. Maybe I need to sample it again in different weather.

muzzbait

This was surprisingly pleasant and something I could happily enjoying smelling ... on someone else.
I'm not one to go for floral scents, but I felt that this one had quite a bit of heft behind it and it was not at all one-dimensional or anything like that.
The salty ylang ylang was a great combo -- one that I didn't think would work as well as it did. There are other components that contribute to this scent, and make it quite a pleasant number, but there is no way on earth I could wear this, personally. I'm not averse to floral scents, not by a long shot, it just lacks that dose of funk that I live for -- this is just TOO clean. I'd like to smell this on others, just not on myself...

HelenRainbow

My priceless treasure. I absolutely love it in the cold, windy weather. It feels like juicy, a bit salty yellow-floral scent, which has unbelievably beautiful elegant sillage.

sam.newman

Has anyone had the opportunity to smell this in the new bottle? I have read that the scent has changed compared to the previous bottle.

To answer my own question: I had the opportunity to purchase the new bottle today.
It definitely has a better staying power than the old bottle. There is something more smooth about it as well.
I liked the old one, but love the new one so much more. Packaging is gorgeous.

DT953

This here is one of the strongest from the set of samples that I've tried so far. A dense, rubbery yellow floral with the ylang ylang providing a bit of fruitiness (banana, perhaps) to my nose. There's a boat load of salt in the opening and it goes down into the depths of the fragrance until it eventually becomes just like sniffing rock salt.

The main body is the fruity ylang, a bit of creamy vanilla and powdery iris. I see mention of patchouli down below and in the pyramid, but unfortunately I don't pick that up (edit: I can smell it on my left wrist, but not my right... this happens sometimes. Always test on both wrists)
I could swear there was some sandalwood in there, though. This would be great for a beach day, I think. Sunny, happy type of vibe.

There's most definitely a parallel to Black Orchid; especially in the beginning. Personally, it also reminds me a bit of Ramon Monegal's Impossible Iris (which reminds me of N°5 but Embruns Ylang doesn't make me think of N°5... go figure). I haven't tried Mahora, but a lot of people seem to think it smells like this. If that's the case, I need not mourn having never tried it.

Overall, I'm not sure if this fragrance suits me. It wears well, smells fine; lovely even. I think this time I just don't see myself wearing it.

hsiangchi.huang

This is a VINTAGE take on ylang ylang, which I'm not a fan of. Generally I like all yellow or white florals, and the salt + vanilla combo. But this is so far from what I expected. The patchouli is STRONG, and reminds of grandma's dusty closet.

CreamSunshine

This was not what I expected. I’m always curious about ylang-heavy perfumes because I adore the scent of pure ylang ylang essential oil. I thought that plus a salty and woody note would be really nice... but that’s not what I get from this fragrance. To me, this is primarily a big old blast of baby powder scent, and what I’m guessing is supposed to be the ylang note comes across more as animalic musk.

I see some previous reviewers saying that this smells almost exactly like a discontinued perfume called Mahora. I think maybe my grandmother had Mahora (though she had many perfumes, so I’m not sure), because I distinctly remember my grandmother smelling exactly like Embruns d’ylang when I hugged her at my aunt’s wedding in the early 2000s.

Venusia

Venus - the goddess of love and beauty - as she was born, from the sea foam, she must have smelled so - salty water, delicate flowers, buttery vanilla on velvety skin. Femininity embodied, beyond any doubt.
For years this scent lived only in my imagination, but somehow I never hoped it could exist. Guerlain is my favorite house en matière of perfume. And it also created my dream fragrance. It arrived. To stay. That’s the end of my search. The French say a woman must have found her perfume by the age of 40. Has she!

sam.newman

I went into my local Guerlain to chase this, because it has been impossible to find.
My usual consultant told me that she just found out that the whole L’Art Et la Matière line is being discontinued in September. She isn’t aware as to if it is completely going or being repackaged.

If anyone in Australia has a decant of Embruns d’Ylang please message me.

——————
I got my sample today.
I have just dabbed it on my wrist, it has a real shimmer to it! I cannot wait to see how it develops!
———————

I have really enjoyed this fragrance, though it could be described as mild and definitely not an overpowering scent.
It starts out crisp and fresh with a burst of ylang which remains. The ylang isn’t a juicy scent, but more of a dry ylang (I assume this is the salt). The freshness disappears and stays simply ylang for a while before the cloves kick in and turns the whole fragrance into a sweet vanilla ylang.

cocofluff

Mainly ylang ylang with cloves and vanilla. Lucky for me as I love a dash of ylang in my fragrances. This fragrance lasts all day and it's lovely till it fades! -

dsty

Embruns d'Ylang is such a wonderful name for a perfume, so evocative! So much so, in fact, that I just had to sample it, even though that very same name told me that it probably wouldn't be my thing: ylang-ylang is a note I can mostly take or leave, and marine elements rarely really work for me either (Lorenzo Villoresi's Aura Maris being the noteworthy exception). Still, I couldn't resist the idea of tropical flowers through a haze of salty ocean spray - maybe it's being cooped up so much inside that's making me long for such an escape, and if it can't be IRL then it might as well be through fragrance...

Well, now that I have my little decant and I've given it a couple of wears, I can only come back to earth: yes, this is very true to its name, and the marine vibe is a very nice spin on the tropical theme, but no, it's still not my thing. It's a pity, because the salty aquatic aspect really goes together wonderfully well with the sweet tropical white florals and the subtly spicy background, making it both original and familiar somehow. I can wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who's looking for something tropical in a more realistic and less syrupy sweet/suntan lotion way. Longevity is also great, and projection is just right - it's obviously the same high quality you can always expect from these Guerlain Exclusifs. But despite all that, it's still just a lukewarm like for me, and I doubt whether I'll ever see the bottom of my little decant - still, I'm glad I got to test it, and it might come in handy if real beaches remain out of reach for much longer.

Dryasiulia

This took several tries. The first was uninspiring but (like a few others) I kept thinking about it.

There was a wear where all I could smell was a memory of my younger days and BPAL Amsterdam where I decided hard pass. But I still kept thinking about it. Then, several weeks and tries later, suddenly I had all the earlier experiences combined (dirty vase water open, daffodils, YLANG, salt, BPAL Amsterdam Aquatic, SALT, vanilla Wasserade) but they became this magical essence.

I read someone else say in a different fragrance review that it was like their skin was exuding the fragrance....thats exactly what I was experiencing (and have ever since) with this.

I don't really like florals, I definitely don't like aquatics and I'm not actually that fond of ylang, but this is magical. (Full disclosure, I am indeed a huge sucker for Wasserade)

Tapinview

Oh my this is just beautiful to me. Ylang is an essential oil that I always have on hand to add to various potions...it is so decadent and even erotic, I sometimes feel more so then tuberose or jasmine. I blind bought this, out here on an Australian farm during the age of Covid. My advice, just buy it before they stuff it up with reformulation. It does capture ylang. There is a washing wave of salt but it's subtle. A tiny beachy tang of tropical and coconut. There is an abstraction to it that is hard to describe; there is a dry sand and heat feeling. I've never really smelled anything like it...I keep thinking, is it related to Le Labo Ylang which is amazing but errs a trifle too masculine for me. I just can't get enough of this magnificent perfume. I wish it came in Extrait and body oil so I could marinate in it,
Ok, there is a hint of Black Orchid, the sexiest heart of it, just a whiff. Masterpiece.

missingpuzzle

I don’t understand all the hail. I’m a very easy to please person when it comes to niche perfumery, especially by Guerlain. There has been barely a scent which I didn’t like, at least a bit. Well, till Embruns d’Ylang came. First, it’s very salty and dry. You have to like salty scents (not fresh aquatic but crispy salty). Then there is this hologram of ylang which is powdery and dry, not lush tropical one (IMO). I couldn’t distinguish anything else, it’s just salty ylang which I wanted to get off my skin. Try before you buy.

Papavero0

Anyone from Oz I could purchase a sample from? Dying to find out how this smells like...

My third acquisition from the L'Art et la Matière line. Embruns d'Ylang, literally "Ylang Spindrift", is a gorgeously lush composition, worthy of any collection.

The heady, high-intensity ylang-ylang takes center stage with supporting roles played by rich sea salt and spicy, sexy clove. The vanilla and patchouli add sweet-green richness, and the bergamot and orange blossom add a floral zest. The overall effect is tropical, buttery, and opulent. This is sumptuous summer in a bottle, and manages to pull it off without bringing in coconut or tiare. There's also enough density and spice to make this appropriate for spring or fall, but I think it might be a bit incongruous in winter. This is one that works better with a little bit of sun and sweat on the skin.

Embruns embodies a warm, inviting luxury that anybody could pull off. The performance is stellar, like many of the other perfumes in this line. In fact, you may want to spray sparingly, as this can fill a room and lasts for at least eight hours. So divine!

chickenpotpie

This is definitely a buoyant Mayotte with more spices, and that uber yummy Guerlain vanilla. The vanilla in Mayotte is not as great as what I get here.

My experience with the scent is different when sprayed versus dabbed, and I'll discuss some of that here.

Unlike some, salt is not something I get lots of when I spray. I get this interesting puff of powder. (why I don't know!)

But I get a giant puff of powder then....big spiraling petals of y'lang and possibly some sprinklings of tuberose falling all around me while I'm eating a vanilla and jasmine spiced custard with wedge of something citrusy.

Dabbed is a different affair altogether. I don't get showered with florals, its more like I'm walking on them and smelling bergamot in my hair. The custard is still there but smaller, not as big.

Where Mayotte can be soft and stay that way, this is a grower so goes on soft but does indeed grow a bit. Put it on at 8am and its now slightly after 1pm. so even 5 hours in, its got quite a decent amount of sillage (I used 4 sprays).

The addition of almond would have made it more in line with Mahora. Glad they skipped it! I think just about everyone who knows Guerlain will be able to notice the lineage, Mahora, Mayotte, Embruns Y'lang as they have distinct similarities.

Houdini4

This stuff has all the tropical, exoticism of Ylang but with a Guerlain type restraint not being as carnal or OTT, or "YAS QWEEN" as some Ylan ylang perfumes. Don't think that this stuff is a slouch or doesn't hit you in the face in the opening with a candy, banana/pineapple, waxy, super femme flowery vibe... because totally does. However, as I mentioned it's tempered and just gets nicer and nicer as it dries down displaying more powdery, deep, Wasser genius.

Now I tend to like Ylang when it's coupled with jasmine or it's with bigger more amber bases just because they tend to warm up and seem less flowery on me. This one has somewhat of that aspect but really it's quite light and cheerful but without lacking substance. I'm surprised how wearable I found it, however it's still not for me to wear but I still give it the highest praise and If you like Guerlain and exotic florals this might just be the holy grail for you?

If I smelled this on a woman, I'd find it very classy and alluring...whatever that is worth?

Update: 06/09/21 I can't get this perfume out of my head. It's stayed with me and that is pretty rare. I actually rate this as one of the best in this art and materials line, that's really saying something too because it's a really fine line of perfumes, with many classics. It's FANTASTIC! I might have to shell out the big bucks you know? For a YLANG perfume??? WTF??? Not my usual cup o tea, I need to try it again to make absolutely certain but I found it an exquisite, light, summery fragrance but with depth and a hint of warmth. Lovely stuff.

SouthernPine

Usually I don't like ylang. Usually L'Art collection is not for me. These perfumes are excellent without doubts so I didn't lose hope one day to get it. But every time they were too vanilla, too sweet, too... not mine.

... until Embruns d'Ylang comes.
It's so good! It's smooth and sensual and elegant but not sweet at all. It's powerful and windy. It's simply great.

And I think Guerlain at least has balls to release such an unusual and not typical for the brand perfume. Thumb up!

andrewatic

This one is very.... „specific“, for lack of a better word. It is true Ylang right off the bat, fresh and crisp, then it mellows into some more complex floral with slightly fruity undertone. I can clearly discern some aquatic hues, but very subtle. In between there is something, I presume it must be the “salty” note, coming in and out of focus for the whole duration of the composition. However, that note is very sophisticated and well behaved.

This fragrance is not something that everyone can pull off. Certainly not a fix for the masses. It is exceptionally feminine, but right off the top of my head I can’t think of a single person I know who could really rock it. In that regard, I think Embruns D’Ylang is probably one of the most “difficult” fragrances I have ever come across.

pozimhoff

Absolutely one of the Terracotta family of fragrances but deeper, more cleverly blended and constructed. Has a good level of staying power which is nice change in a Guerlain Art of Materials scent so many are fleeting which can be distressing at this price point. Heady summertime floral with spice touches. A must for Guerlain collectors but if you are watching your pennies I'm not sure that the average consumer would find it compelling enough to pay the price of this as opposed to Terracotta le parfum which can be obtained at bargain prices from time to time. My only disappointment is that it is not a totally unique fragrance. They come along so rarely we do get our hopes up.

leokurkdjian88

very nice parfum and I love ylang ylang.for ever GUERLAIN

gaby.kutschinski

THis is such a strange but wonderful dense fragrance! It combines smells of fallen unknown tropic flower leaves. It smells like a monring on a maldive island, where the strong smelling leaves lay on masse upon the ground on a path to the sandy salty beaches..dreamlike..

Ylang en tuberose I think to sniff up. Then also jasmine and vanille turn up. Later I get some warm honey woodsy notes. It lingers a few hours then only a fine flower trace is left over on my skin.

Even so, I love the originality and playfulness of the flowers , it really surpised me, never sniffed a thingt like that..Performance like it does not meet my expactations, but I spray it over and again, because it s a new love for me.

I certainly cannot smell any melone like note here but ok, that s our personal perspection. I do not regret my blind buy! :=)
